Sai Baba’s
discourses & writings

Sai Baba’s discourses are published in a series entitled “Sathya Sai Speaks”. There are a total of 38 volumes in this series. Discourses that Sai Baba gave at summer schools over the years are in a separate book series, called “Summer Showers”, which are contained in 14 volumes. In addition, Sai Baba wrote 14 books, called the “Vahinis”. They cover a wide range of topics, from the Bhagawad Gita to meditation and education.

SATHYA SAI SPEAKS (42 volumes)

Swami calls his discourses not speeches but ‘conversations’, for the devotees actually prompt the subject matter. Their views and visions, faith and strength, ideas and enthusiasm shape the style, content, and flow of Swami’s talks. He draws from the heads and hearts of the thousands in His audience the doubts that haunt them, the prejudices that weaken them, and the desires that enslave them. And when He closes His ‘conversations’, doubts are dissolved, prejudices are withered, and desires are dismissed as worthless. Whether you hear or read the discourses, their impact is equally powerful.

THE VAHINI SERIES (16 volumes)

Vahini means “stream” in Sanskrit. These writings are Swami’s streams of thought on a range of subjects, including meditation, right action, wisdom, peace, divine love, and on Hindu scriptures, such as the Bhagawad Gita, the Upanishads and the story of Rama. The Vahinis originally appeared in the Prashanti Nilayam’s monthly magazine Sanathana Sarathi (The Eternal Charioteer).

SUMMER SHOWERS IN BRINDAVAN (14 volumes)

During the 1970’s, Sathya Sai Baba initiated a series of Summer Courses on Indian Culture and Spirituality at Brindavan in His ashram in Whitefield, outside Bangalore. These were open to students from all over India as well as to observers and guests from around the world. This series contains all of Swami’s discourses from these courses.

SATHYAM SIVAM SUNDARAM
(a series on the life of Sathya Sai Baba, by N. Kasturi)

In this major four-volume biography, Kasturi describes the advent of the divine in human form as Sathya Sai Baba. Memorable Swami events and stories, as well as valuable excerpts from Swami’s discourses, are woven throughout all four volumes.

PART I covers Swami’s life from his birth in 1926 through 1961. It includes background information about Swami’s family and the village of Puttaparthi, stories of many devotees and anecdotes from the past. Details of the miraculous feats of His childhood and the extraordinary beginnings of his mission at age 13 are to be found here.

PART II includes a resume of the timeline 1926 through 1967. Throughout this volume are references to the words of Shirdi Sai Baba (the previous incarnation of Sathya Sai Baba), revealing the similarity of their teachings and the many instances in which this Baba has fulfilled the predictions of his predecessor. There is a remarkable chapter about Swami’s influence on prisoners and letters He sent to them.

PART III covers 1968 through 1973. Included are details of Swami’s journey to Africa, his only trip abroad so far. His talks to crowds in Kenya and Uganda are detailed, as well as his meeting with former dictator Idi Amin. This volume also contains references to Swami’s statement about the nature and purpose of his miracles.

PART IV brings the reader up to 1980. Here we find details of Swami’s increasing emphasis on education, as evidenced by the summer courses, the building of schools and colleges, and Swami’s many references to the true nature of education. We also see in this period the dramatic growth in the number of devotees (including many foreigners) arriving at Prasanthi Nilayam. Prof. Kasturi relates the experiences of Dr. John Hislop, Dr. Samuel Sandweiss, and Charles Penn, among others.
